John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made it clear that he will only accept the results of Ghana’s December 7, 2024 elections if the process is transparent and fair.
In an exclusive interview with BBC Africa’s Thomas Naadi, Mahama expressed deep concerns over the potential for election irregularities and the integrity of the electoral process.
When asked whether he would accept the election results no matter the outcome, Mahama responded, “If on the election day
there is widespread ballot snatching, people being beaten, the military intimidating voters, shooting people, and thugs rampaging, you want me to accept that result? It will depend on the transparency and fairness of the process.”
With the general elections fast approaching, Mahama’s comments underline the stakes in what is expected to be a highly contentious election.
Ghana’s December 7 elections will not only determine the next president but also elect members of Parliament for all 275 seats.
These elections are taking place amid pressing economic challenges, including high inflation and unemployment rates, adding to the pressure on the democratic process.
