The Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edudzi Tamakloe, has issued a strong warning to Member of Parliament for Old Tafo Constituency, Vincent Ekow Assafuah suggesting that if the standards set by President Akufo-Addo’s administration were applied to members of the ruling party, many would end up behind bars.
He made this statement during an interview Alfred Ocansey on TV3 where he recounted past instances of what he believes to be political victimization under the previous administration.
He recalled how prominent figures within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including John Jinapor and former Deputy Attorney General, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, faced intimidation and legal action.
According to Edudzi , some were subjected to armed raids at their homes, merely for carrying out their duties or sharing legal opinions that were not in line with the government’s interests.
“You should be thanking your God,”
“If we use the Akufo-Addo standard from 2017 to now, most of you will be in prison. Look at what people have gone through in silence.”
He narrated how John Jinapor, who was reportedly confronted by armed men at his home, an event he believes exemplifies the hostile tactics used by the government to suppress opposition figures.
“People are quiet, but they are watching,”
He also took aim at the removal of former Auditor General, Yao Domelevo, claiming that since Domelevo’s unceremonious departure from office, no serious action has been taken regarding findings related to corruption, especially with regard to the management of COVID-19 funds.
Edudzi also raised concerns about 500 million Ghanaian cedis allegedly being misappropriated during the pandemic, yet no meaningful steps have been taken to investigate or hold those responsible accountable.
“If due process is followed, the truth will come out.”
