President-Elect John Dramani Mahama has expressed his strong support for the long-overdue review of Ghana’s constitution, a process initially started by the late President John Atta Mills.
Mahama’s bold stance on resuming the constitutional review has been met with enthusiasm, especially from those who have questioned why the process stalled after President Mills’ passing.
Mahama emphasized the importance of revisiting the Constitution to ensure it continues to serve the country effectively.
“One of the early things that I think I want to do is to begin again the process that was started by Professor Mills in respect of the Constitutional Review.
It stalled at a certain point, and for the last eight years, we haven’t moved it anywhere. I think that the time has come for us to look at our Constitution again.”
“It has served us well, and I still believe it’s one of the best constitutions any African country can have.
But after using it for several years, we realized that there are a few parts that we need to tweak so that it can serve us for even further generations to come,” he stated.
The former president outlined his plan to convene a national validation conference, bringing together key stakeholders in a consultative assembly.
This conference would aim to review and refine the Constitutional Review report, taking into account both past recommendations and new considerations that may have emerged in the current political landscape.
He expressed optimism about the potential for a more inclusive and up-to-date Constitution, which would better serve the needs of Ghana for future generations.
Hallelujah! Prez Mahama’s bold stance on reviewing the constitution as started by Prez Mills is exciting to hear. Consistently, I have questioned why the process stalled after the late Prez passed. This is good news & I support it 100%. Vindication is coming. Ghana 🇬🇭 First🙏 pic.twitter.com/cice21OZ2z
