Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to swiftly sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law if it is ruled constitutional by the Supreme Court.
The bill, which has been a topic of intense debate, is currently awaiting a ruling from the Court, with the judgment set for December 18, 2024.
The bill, which has been challenged on constitutional grounds by Richard Dela Sky, is at the center of legal proceedings that have been ongoing since May 2024.
Critics of the bill have accused the Chief Justice of delaying its resolution, but the Judicial Service clarified that the delay stemmed from the parties’ failure to submit the required documents to move the case forward.
The Speaker of Parliament and the Attorney General were granted leave to file their defenses, and at a hearing earlier this week, the court allowed the applicant to amend parts of his statement of case, giving the defendants a chance to respond.
The matter was adjourned, with the court setting December 18 for its final ruling.
In a recent visit to Prophet Adom Kyei Duah’s church, Dr. Bawumia reiterated his commitment to the bill, stating, “I think that is very, very important.
The Bill is before the Supreme Court right now, and I think there are certain challenges that have been made to it, questioning whether it’s consistent with the constitution.”
He added, “Of course, we’ll wait for it to come, and once it’s out of the Supreme Court and they declare it constitutional, I believe signing is automatic.
There shouldn’t be any issue. No ifs and no buts, we won’t allow it.”
