Paul Twum Barimah, the Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, found himself the subject of lighthearted mockery in Parliament on December 17, 2024, after losing his seat in the recently concluded elections. The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, playfully inquired about the MP’s name and constituency as Barimah stood to make a submission.
The mood lightened when Barimah humorously remarked that an “old lady” had “kicked his ass” in the election, referring to his defeat by Rachel Amma Owusuaa, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate.
Owusuaa had made history by winning the Dormaa East seat with 12,310 votes, narrowly defeating Barimah, who secured 12,050 votes.
As Barimah humorously explained his loss, his colleagues couldn’t resist teasing him further, with one remarking that an elderly woman had taken his seat.
The Speaker, picking up on the jest, asked Barimah for clarification, leading to his lighthearted response, “Mr. Speaker, it is very unfortunate that an old lady kicked my ass.”
The comment sent the chamber into laughter.
In response, Speaker Bagbin wittily quipped, “Oh, you lost the election? That is why you want to be heard for the last time.”
The exchange, filled with humor and camaraderie, was a memorable moment in the parliamentary session.
In the final tally, alongside Owusuaa’s victory, an Independent candidate, Emmanuel Gyabaah, received 126 votes, and 314 ballots were rejected out of the 24,486 valid votes cast.
