The outgoing Sekondi Member of Parliament Andrew Egyapa Mercer has revealed he did not see his defeat in the just ended 2024 parliamentary elections coming.
According to him, he went around, and people sentiment suggested there was a lack of desire to participate in the electoral process.
Andrew Egyapa Mercer also revealed he has moved on from his defeat in the elections.
Speaking on Joy News Super Morning Show, he stated, “I didn’t see it coming, to be very blunt, I didn’t see it coming at all, you go on rounds and you hear some sentiments that is suggesting of people’s lack of desire to participate in the electoral process and you engage them you speak to them, they tell you they have heard you, they will vote for you”.
“On the day of the election, you are confronted with a level of apathy, which is never been seen in our political history, even though I didn’t see it coming, I am always prepared for whatever outcome, and so I moved on that very night, but it is what the people have said, they have spoken loud and clear”, Egyapa Mercer added.
The member of parliament further detailed he lost about 6000 votes while his main opponent gained about 3000.
“I dropped about 6000 votes and my opponent, a new candidate increased about 3000, and so what it meant is that a lot more people who had voted for me in 2020 have simply not turned up to vote, and so I don’t know whether to say it is painful”, he stated.
Egyapa Mercer’s defeat in the 2024 elections ends his two-term tenure in Parliament, after he succeeded Papa Owusu Ankomah in 2016.
