The Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has finally responded to the growing calls for him to contest the NDC flagbearer position after John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking in an interview with TV3, on Friday, December 13, 2024 Iddrisu expressed his interest in pursuing the presidency, despite acknowledging the challenges that come with such a pursuit.
Speaking during an interview on TV3. He stated, “My eye is on the ball, but I don’t know about tomorrow.”
Haruna Iddrisu has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tamale South Constituency since 2005.
Haruna has served in various leadership roles, including Minister for Communications, Minister for Trade and Industry, and Minister for Employment and Labour Relations.
From 2017 to 2023, he was the Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, where he led the NDC’s opposition. Known for his intelligence and leadership, he is a respected figure in Ghanaian politics.
Earlier, Mr. Iddrisu discussed the economic issues inherited by President-elect John Dramani Mahama, including high inflation and a weakening currency, but expressed confidence in Mr. Mahama’s ability to address these problems.
He also spoke about the importance of maintaining trust with Ghanaians, stating.
“We cannot take the people for granted. Ghanaians say, ‘If you fail us, we will reject you tomorrow,” he said.
This comes after John Dramani Mahama of the NDC won the 2024 elections. It is expected that after four years, John Mahama may not get the opportunity to stand for president again.
The NDC would have to choose a new flag bearer. As of now Haruna Iddrisu have shown interest in it.
