The running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh known as NAPO, has expressed mixed reactions following the party’s recent election loss, pointing out that despite the outcome, the Ashanti Region demonstrated impressive voter engagement.
Speaking to some party executives in the ashanti region, Dr. Opoku Prempeh highlighted that the Ashanti Region achieved a notable 65% voter turnout, underscoring the region’s commitment to the democratic process.
He acknowledged the region’s key role in the NPP’s efforts and emphasized that the high participation rate was a testament to the resilience and political awareness of the people in the region.
He also condemned the attacks on state institutions and other areas, by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) describing the incidents as a dangerous escalation. Comparing to similar violence in 2009, when NDC supporters were involved in violent confrontations, he pointed out that such actions were detrimental to Ghana’s reputation and democratic stability.
“In 2009, we witnessed attacks that went as far as NDC supporters attacking each other,” Dr. Prempeh remarked.
“It is disheartening to see this cycle repeat itself, especially after the peaceful elections we had hoped for.”
