Four individuals have been arrested at Kwahu Nketepa in the Afram Plains South District of the Eastern Region for their alleged involvement in smuggling cocoa to Togo.
The arrests followed a joint operation by the National Anti-Cocoa Smuggling Taskforce and the Nketepa Community Watchdog Committee.
Two trucks carrying 400 bags of cocoa were intercepted during the operation, which took place around 1 a.m. on Saturday.
According to Anthony Ablor, commander of the Watchdog Committee, the operation was based on a tip-off received a week earlier.
“The drivers and their mates attempted to flee, but we managed to intercept the trucks, and the police arrested them.
They are currently assisting with investigations,” Mr. Ablor told Adom News.
The Assembly Member for Nketepa Electoral Area, Bosu Yaw, revealed that the area has become a hotspot for cocoa smuggling.
He emphasized that surveillance has been intensified to combat the illegal activity.
“This place has been a target for smugglers for a while now.
We’ve increased our efforts to stop them, but we need government support.
Motorbikes and other logistics will help us enhance our operations,” Mr. Bosu appealed.
The National Anti-Cocoa Smuggling Taskforce, under the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), continues its mission to curtail cocoa smuggling, which undermines the nation’s economy. Investigations into this incident are ongoing.
