The dynamics of every election differ from country to country, but all around the world, the one constant in politics is the ‘power of swing regions/states’.
The two dominant political parties in Ghana’s political landscape, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are known to have strongholds all over the country.
These strongholds are areas in which the two party’s amass hundreds of thousands of votes from voters and in local parlance these areas are a “cool chop” for them.
In Ghana’s case, the Ashanti Region is regarded as a stronghold of the NPP, with the Volta Region being the stronghold of the NDC.
Although these regions give the various political parties a huge chunk of votes, they do not decide who wins the presidential race.
The regions which determine who is elected as President are referred to as swing regions.
These regions hold no strict loyalty to a particular political party, but rather vote for the parties based on their proposed policies and sound manifesto promises.
In Ghana, there are four (4) key regions (note, we are using the previous 10 regions) which determine who becomes Ghana’s next president.
These regions are namely; Greater Accra, Central, Brong Ahafo and Western regions.
As Ghana goes to the polls on Saturday December 7, 2024, attention must be given to these regions as the candidate who leads the polls over there is likely to be Ghana’s next president.
