The Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has officially declared John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the President-elect in the 2024 general election. The announcement was made on December 9, 2024, two days after Ghanaians went to the polls and over 30 hours after Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia conceded defeat.
According to the EC’s certified results, Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total valid votes cast. His closest contender, Dr. Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.
Other candidates, including Nana Kwame Bediako, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, and Akua Donkor, collectively accounted for the remaining votes. Bediako received 205,721 votes, representing 1.84%.
A Historic Return
This victory marks a historic comeback for Mahama, who previously served as President from 2012 to 2017. He is now set to return to the presidency, making him the first Ghanaian leader to achieve such a feat.
Jean Mensa commended Ghanaians for their participation in the democratic process, emphasizing that the election was conducted transparently and peacefully. The EC Chairperson also urged citizens to remain united as the nation transitions to new leadership.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had earlier conceded defeat and congratulated Mahama, describing the outcome as part of Ghana’s democratic process.
Looking Ahead
As Mahama prepares to be sworn in as Ghana’s President in January 2025, his victory speech focused on unity, economic recovery, and inclusive governance. His win reflects a strong mandate from Ghanaians, who have expressed hope for a new chapter in the country’s development.
The 2024 general election will be remembered for its peaceful conduct and the democratic maturity exhibited by political actors and citizens alike.
