Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, the MP-elect for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, has urged the Ghana Police Service to expedite investigations into the shooting incident that occurred at the Iron City office in Kasoa, Central Region, which resulted in one death and another person being injured.
The incident, which took place on December 7, 2024, is believed to have been linked to election-related violence in the Awutu Senya East Constituency. The victims were reportedly shot at the residence of Okunnor, the parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The suspects in the case have been identified as Awudu Yakubum, Kwabena Essah, Hakeem Bawa, and Issaka Mashual. An AK47 rifle with 69 rounds of ammunition was recovered from the suspects.
The injured victim is currently receiving medical treatment, while the body of the deceased has been taken to the morgue for preservation and autopsy. The four suspects remain in police custody, assisting with the investigation.
Sources indicate that both the deceased and the injured individual were members of the NDC. Reports suggest that the violence erupted after Okunnor allegedly declared herself the winner of the parliamentary elections. The assailants are said to have followed her and opened fire as the victims were heading home after observing the vote counting and collation process.
Ghana Police Service sources have confirmed that the victims were supporters of Okunnor.
In a statement to the media, Okunnor called on the police to fast-track their investigation and bring perpetrators to book.
