The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a red alert regarding the dusty dry air in Ghana.
According to data analysis collected from Accra in December 2024, the Breath Accra Project website showed high levels of pollution.
The EPA has advised the public especially children, pregnant women, and older adults with pre-existing heart conditions and lung diseases to wear a nose mask to keep safe.
They have also cautioned people with condition to limit their outdoor activities detailing that the dusty dry air could trigger allergic reaction and cause their condition to get worse.
The Facility Manager of Afri-SET Dr. Allison Felix Hughes confirmed the elevated level of dust as unhealthy air.
Dr. Allison detailed, “If by any way you have to be out, then try to protect yourself by either wearing a face mask or limiting the number of hours outdoors to reduce exposure. This is a natural phenomenon. We have no control over it”.
“It is during this period that you see hospital admissions growing with cases of asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory diseases”, he revealed.
He further added, “Vehicles and other fuel-burning installations/machines, including generator sets, should be serviced regularly to optimize their functioning. Idling of their engines should be avoided”.
