The former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Kwadwo Twum Boafo, has expressed his frustration over the soaring electricity bills in the country, which he believes are deterring potential investors.
Speaking out on the issue, he criticized the government’s management of electricity pricing, noting that it is a major concern for investors.
“The high electricity prices in this country are so exorbitant that they actually deter investment,” Boafo said, adding that, during his tenure as head of the Free Zones Authority, investors frequently raised the issue of electricity costs.
“It’s shocking what your meters can run into. The wastefulness is utterly shocking.”
“There are people who do not even make enough money to cover their electricity bills, let alone put food on the table,” Boafo lamented.
He also raised concerns about potential corruption in government dealings, inferring that some officials may be benefiting from the high electricity charges.
He remarked, “If I sit here and infer that some people in government are benefiting from that transaction, will I be lying? But we are being told that I can’t say that because I don’t have proof.”
“He made away with $87 million. The government had 7 million. Now what is wrong with us?” Boafo questioned.
Boafo suggested that if the $87 million had been invested in projects like training doctors at Noguchi Memorial Institute to deal with infectious diseases, the country would have been better off.
