According to sources, the angry party supporters attacked him over the abysmal performance of the party in the region.

Chairman Wontumi prior to the December 7 election had bragged about the NPP wining all seats in the Ashanti Region and securing 85% of the total votes cast in region for the presidential race.

He described the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as not being an option for the Ghanaian people.

The NPP has never achieved a 77% of total votes cast for the presidential race in its stronghold, the Ashanti Region.

The best results achieved in the region was 76% in 2004 and 2016 but Wontumi promised an 85% win.

His failure to achieve this promise, but rather underperform infuriated party supporters in the region who claim he is one of the worst performing chairmen in the history of the region.
