Tensions erupted at the Greater Accra Regional Collation Center following a heated disagreement between representatives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the parliamentary results for the Okaikwei Central and Dome Kwabenya constituencies.
The standoff began late last night as party agents from both sides accused each other of attempting to manipulate the figures presented by the Electoral Commission (EC).
At the heart of the dispute are alleged discrepancies in the collated results from some polling stations, with both parties claiming victory.
In Okaikwei Central, the controversy has centered on the race between the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Patrick Yaw Boamah of the NPP, and the NDC’s Baba Sadiq.
Preliminary results indicate a closely contested battle, with Patrick Yaw Boamah seeking to retain his seat amidst strong competition from Baba Sadiq.
The NPP representative, citing figures from pink sheets, insists their candidate has a clear lead. However, the NDC challenges this claim, alleging that some results were tampered with during collation.
The NPP’s camp, on the other hand, accused the NDC of deliberately stalling the process.
“This is nothing but a desperate attempt to overturn our victory,” stated Afia Boateng, an NPP representative.
In Dome Kwabenya, the race is between Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, and Michael Aaron Oquaye Jnr. of the NPP.
Both candidates are locked in a fierce contest, with allegations of irregularities fueling the ongoing chaos.
The Electoral Commission has called for calm, assuring both parties that the process will remain transparent.
“We are committed to ensuring that every vote counts and that the outcome reflects the people’s choice,” said an EC official addressing the media.
