Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, has officially been declared the loser in the December 7 parliamentary elections for his constituency.
This announcement comes nearly a week after Ghana’s December 7 general elections, which saw John Mahama win the presidential race.
However, the parliamentary seat for Nsawam-Adoagyiri had remained contested due to disruptions during the collation of results.
At a press conference, Annoh-Dompreh recounted the events that unfolded on election day.
He explained that the Electoral Commission (EC) had collated results from various polling stations and forwarded them to the collation center.
However, he stated that tensions escalated when supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) gathered at the St. Martins Senior High School, where the EC was conducting the collation process.
Annoh-Dompreh alleged that NDC supporters vandalized EC materials, including destroying pink sheets and laptops.
The situation quickly turned violent, with Annoh-Dompreh’s vehicle also being targeted and damaged.
He was forced to seek refuge as chaos unfolded.
He further stated that the NDC supporters, armed with knives, clutches, and missiles, caused significant disruption, prompting the intervention of both the police and military to restore order.
Expressing his disappointment with the NDC’s actions, Annoh-Dompreh emphasized that the election should have been a peaceful and orderly process.
He commended the EC for their professionalism and called on the NDC to respect the democratic process, highlighting the importance of upholding the integrity of the electoral system.
