Ghanaians have taken to social media to criticize McDan Aviation following the shutdown of its private jet terminal, Terminal 1, by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).
The closure, attributed to the company’s failure to settle a debt exceeding $3 million, has sparked mixed reactions online.
A visit to the terminal revealed police officers stationed at the entrance, restricting access.
Speaking to GHOne/Starr News, Alhaji Abdul Issaka Bamba, chairman of the Ghana Airport Company Divisional Union of the Public Services Workers Union of TUC, supported the management’s decision, stating that the debt was long overdue.
He added that other partners owing GACL would face similar actions if payments were not made promptly.
According to the Union, the debt is the result of unpaid rental fees and land acquired by McDan for its operations.
The shutdown has stirred public reactions, with some celebrating the development due to McDan’s past remarks about Ghanaian youth.
“Sometime ago, McDan called the youth lazy and has been unpopular amongst the youth, so this news came as joy to most,” one comment read.
Others defended McDan, arguing that debt is common among business moguls. “I think many of you do not understand the lifestyle of these millionaires and billionaires.
Ninety-eight percent of these billionaires are in debt—that’s how they make their riches,” said another.
Some took a lighter tone, joking about the timing of the shutdown.
“You must be kidding me; they want to shut it down before ORAL begins,” one person remarked, while another quipped, “Now the management are even free. Shid, so funny!”
Others blamed political dynamics for the situation, suggesting, “The change in government worry some people waaa.”
Meanwhile McDan Aviation has denied claims that it owes GACL $3 million, describing the figure as inaccurate.
