President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has raised serious allegations against the Akufo-Addo administration, accusing it of harassing and threatening the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, with removal from office.
Cudjoe claims the IGP’s “crime” is his refusal to allow the government to manipulate election results and for standing firm on the need for peaceful and transparent elections.
According to Cudjoe, the Akufo-Addo administration had planned to use election rigging machinery in previous by-elections and had hoped to deploy it again, but Dr. Akuffo-Dampare’s leadership prevented these actions.
The IMANI President further asserts that the government is now colluding with the Electoral Commission (EC) to force security services into assisting in the re-collation of results in nine constituencies areas the government believes it has won.
He condemned what he called “misbehaving elements” within the government who, in his view, are jeopardizing the nation’s democracy.
“It is shameful that elements of this government are misbehaving and putting our democracy in great danger,” Cudjoe said.
“They are mistaken and should they dare remove the IGP and install their puppets to grant the rigging-minded and pliant EC to overturn the will of the people in the 9 constituencies, they will be responsible for what happens to them.”
The allegations from Cudjoe also highlight an ongoing case that IMANI Africa has brought before the Supreme Court, seeking an interpretation on whether the Constitution allows an incoming president to arbitrarily remove heads of security services. While awaiting the court’s ruling, Cudjoe urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant in opposing any moves to remove the IGP.
“We should fight the latest thuggish approach to remove an IGP who only served his country,” Cudjoe added. “Open your eyes, people, and fight for civility and order!”
