Member of Parliament for Banda and Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, has called for the Majority Leader in the 8th Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to be appointed as the Minority Leader in the 9th Parliament, describing him as a “born opposition leader.”
Ibrahim argued that Afenyo-Markin, despite his tenure as Majority Leader, has demonstrated skills that are better suited for the opposition rather than the ruling side.
He explained that while Afenyo-Markin excelled in opposition in the past, his leadership in the majority position was less effective,
likening his approach to that of a one-sided attacker who lacks the defensive balance required for a successful majority leadership.
“When a party is losing, it loses, and it leads most of the senior ones in. Technically, just like in our culture where the oldest man becomes abusuapani , in every minority party, there are seniors who occupy those positions. But technically,
I could see that the MPP minority will not face challenges in selecting their leader,” Ibrahim said.
He went on to suggest that Afenyo-Markin’s ability to “attack” in an opposition role could make him a formidable Minority Leader, especially given his political expertise.
Ibrahim emphasized that in a majority role, one’s primary function is to defend, while in the minority, the leader must be aggressive in holding the government accountable.
“In majority, you defend; in minority, you attack. He is an attacking midfielder, not a defensive one,” he explained.
