Tension is brewing in Kumasi as the Kejetia Queen Mothers Association strongly opposes the planned closure of the Kejetia market on December 7, 2024, Election Day.
This decision comes after Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), requested the closure during a meeting at the Kumasi Culture Centre.
The association, led by Nana Wiafe, Vice Chairman of the Kejetia, Central Market, and Abinkyi Market, emphasized that the closure would have a detrimental effect on their businesses, especially given the current economic situation.
Despite their initial rejection, Kumasi Mayor Samuel Pyne has instructed market management to proceed with the closure.
However, the Queen Mothers are calling for a reconsideration, prioritizing the welfare of traders.
They’ve also vowed to fiercely resist any attempt to shut down the market, saying, “As the Market Queen Mothers, we stand against this decision and will not allow it to happen.”
This isn’t the first time the Queen Mothers have clashed with the NPP. Previously, they expressed deep dismay over Vice President Bawumia’s snub.
The situation is unfolding, and it’s unclear how the market closure will play out on Election Day.
