A 38-year-old trader, Victoria Adjei, from Asankran-Moseaso in the Amenfi West municipality, has been arrested after allegedly poisoning her husband and his friend. The poisoning occurred after Victoria’s husband, Eric Kwasine, had repeatedly threatened to divorce her.

According to reports, the incident unfolded while Eric and his friend, Francis Amoako, were cooking a snail soup (locally known as Abunabunu) at home.

Eric left for work, leaving the soup under the care of his friend, Francis, while his wife, Victoria, remained in the house.

After the soup was cooked, Francis served himself a portion of it but soon began experiencing severe stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. Just as the situation unfolded, Eric returned home and took his friend to the Father Thomas Alan Roony Memorial Hospital in Asankrangwa, where doctors confirmed that the soup had been laced with poison.

A report was immediately filed with the Asankrangwa District Police, and Victoria was arrested as the primary suspect.

During questioning, she confessed to poisoning the soup by adding chemicals, commonly used for spraying cocoa farms, known as Akate.

Victoria explained that the poisoning was a result of the repeated threats from her husband to divorce her. In their latest argument, she claimed Eric had become more serious about the divorce, prompting her to take drastic action in a bid to end his life.

Victoria has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear before court on November 21, 2024. Meanwhile, Francis is receiving treatment at the Asankrangwa Catholic Hospital for food poisoning.

The police have sent samples of the soup to the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for further analysis.
