The Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, Kobina Tahir Hammond, has vowed to charge Speaker Alban Bagbin with contempt, accusing him of flouting a Supreme Court ruling regarding vacant seats in Parliament.

Speaking to the press after the Speaker suspended Parliament indefinitely on November 7, 2024, Hammond criticized Bagbin for disregarding the court’s decision and for failing to properly implement its directive.

“The Supreme Court has overruled the Speaker’s decision to declare four seats vacant, and we want the ruling of the court to be respected,” Hammond declared.

He argued that the Speaker should have clarified which side of the House should occupy the Majority seats, following the court’s ruling to restore the previous configuration.

Hammond expressed frustration that, despite the court’s order, the NDC MPs quickly took their seats on the Majority side, which he described as a direct challenge to the court’s authority.

“The Speaker was supposed to follow the ruling by the Supreme Court so that we would know we are going back as the Majority,” he added.
