A Yutong bus, carrying 1,800 rounds of ammunition, was intercepted at the Customs barrier in Binguri, Binduri District, Upper East Region, by the Bawku Divisional Police Command yesterday.
The bus, with registration number GW 6471-22, was en route from Kumasi to Bawku.
The driver, whose identity has been withheld, was arrested, and the vehicle was impounded by the police.
According to the source, the ammunition is in the custody of the police, but it could not say when the driver would be taken to court.
The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA), in a press release, condemned the transportation of the ammunition and called on the security agencies, particularly the police and Ministry of National Security, to thoroughly investigate the matter.
A statement signed by Awudu Bagura, President of MAYA, said: “We commend the security agencies for their diligence and swift action in seizing the bus carrying ammunition.”
The group called for investigations to ascertain the source or origin of the ammunition, the individuals or groups involved, and the intended purpose of the consignment.
