Commuters traveling along the Spintex Road to East Legon have described navigating traffic at the Flower Pot Interchange as the “most painful experience” in the history of Accra’s traffic.

The frustration is palpable among residents, with many expressing exasperation over the delays caused by the intersection, which has long been a bottleneck for travelers heading to the city’s eastern suburbs.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, one listener shared their firsthand account of the daily struggle: “Navigating this traffic has been the most painful experience for me.

Every time I approach the Flower Pot Interchange, I dread the congestion. It’s frustrating.”

Despite the ongoing traffic challenges, there is some hope on the horizon. President Akufo-Addo is set to officially commission the newly completed Flower Pot Interchange on November 19, 2024, according to Communications Director at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin.

The new interchange, part of the broader Flyover over the Motorway Interchange Project, is designed to ease traffic congestion and provide an alternative route for North-South movement.

The project has undergone several revisions and now features an 800-meter flyover, which begins at the Palace Mall off the Spintex Road and extends to Boundary Road in East Legon.

Additional upgrades to the area include ramps to the motorway, improvements at the Flower Pot roundabout, and enhanced access through the old tunnel to East Legon.

The primary objectives of the project are to improve the daily commute for thousands of commuters traveling between the North and South of Accra, particularly along the Accra-Tema Motorway, and to reduce congestion at the often-congested Flower Pot Intersection.

One Citi Breakfast Show listener described navigating traffic at the Flower Pot Interchange as the “most painful experience for me in the history of Accra traffic.”
