English side, Tottenham Hospurs, has appealed the decision of the FA to ban midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur for seven games, following a racial slur he made about team-mate Heung-Min Son on a TV show in Uruguay.

Tottenham in a statement said they “accept the guilty verdict” against Bentancur, but “believe the subsequent sanction is severe”.

His domestic suspension will remain in place while the appeal is heard, Spurs added.

In addition to his suspension, Bentancur was also fined £100,000 by the Football Association.

Bentancur during an interview in June was asked to show the shirt of a Spurs player and replied: “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”

The player was swift in issuing an apology for his comments, but due to this being an “aggravated breach”, an independent regulatory commission panel were required to either uphold the FA charge or dismiss the case.

Son reacting to the comment said he and Bentancur still remained “brothers” and “nothing had changed” after the apology.

Tottenham will travel to Manchester City next on Saturday November 23, and will play their six other games without their midfielder if their appeal goes unheard.
