The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has revealed the growing frustrations within the NPP caucus, accusing Speaker Alban Bagbin of undermining the party’s position and failing to engage in crucial dialogue.
Afenyo-Markin described the NPP as “bleeding” due to the Speaker’s actions, which he claims have caused tension within the House.
Afenyo-Markin detailed an incident where he and his colleague, Dr. Ato Forson, were summoned by the Speaker for a meeting, only for the Speaker to leave unexpectedly before they could meet.
Despite multiple attempts to reach out, Afenyo-Markin claimed that the Speaker did not make any further efforts to engage, leading to even greater frustrations within the NPP.
His remarks came on Monday, November 11, outside the Supreme Court premises, following a hearing in which the apex court considered arguments from both plaintiffs and the Attorney-General regarding the issue of vacant parliamentary seats.
Speaking to the media, Afenyo-Markin expressed his commitment to finding common ground, describing himself as a centrist politician who believes in consensus-building. He emphasized that he would still be open to the Speaker’s “olive branch” and hoped that, upon reflection, the Speaker would demonstrate the statesmanship he is known for.
Meanwhile Supreme Court has scheduled Tuesday, 12th November 2024, to deliver a landmark judgment on the disputed decision by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin to declare four parliamentary seats as vacant.
