The Supreme Court has ruled against Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant, siding with a challenge brought forward by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

In Tuesday’s ruling, the seven-member panel, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, delivered a 5-2 majority decision in favor of Afenyo-Markin. Chief Justice Torkornoo noted that a detailed explanation of the ruling will be provided later.

Speaking to the media after the Supreme Court ruling,  Afenyo-Markins stated, “We can only thank God, and also a moment for all of us to rally around the choice we made in 1992, Democracy that is the part NPP majority took to ensure that we do right with the law, nothing more except to say that we expect our colleagues that is the NDC including Mr. Speaker to respect the outcome of this case, so that we move on as a nation”.

He added, “All we have is the peace of the country, all we have is our democracy and in West Africa and Africa as a whole, Ghana shines in the eyes of the people in terms of democracy. So, this is another feat we have achieved, and we must celebrate it is not the matter of NPP against the NDC but a matter of constitutional interpretation”.
