Chelsea legend, Frank Lampard has been announced the new head coach for Coventry City.

Lampard who has been away from football management for about 18 months has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the struggling club.

Coventry have won just four of their 17 games so far in 2024-25, which led to the sacking of Mark Robins.

There are fears the club might sink to relegation as they are just two points above the drop zone, and their new coach will have the task of ensuring the club stays in the League.

Club owner Doug King said in a statement: “I am delighted that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as Head Coach. Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this League to be successful.”

“His experiences thereafter at Chelsea and Everton will ensure he brings to our talented squad clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level that we as a Club are striving to reach,” he added.

Lampard’s last experience as a manager came as Chelsea’s interim boss, seeing out the 2022-23 campaign at Stamford Bridge. He has also managed at Derby and Everton, meaning he returns to the Championship vastly more experienced than when he started his managerial journey with the Rams in 2018.

It was only 18 months ago that Coventry made it to the play-off final and Lampard would love nothing more than to get them back into a position that would allow them to challenge for a place in the Premier League once again.
