The Kusaug Traditional Council (KTC) has announced the lifting of its suspension on political activities by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the six constituencies of Kusaug, despite ongoing tensions linked to the Bawku conflict.

The suspension was initially imposed following the smuggling of Mamprusi fugitive Seidu Abagre into Bawku, which the KTC blamed for reigniting ethnic and chieftaincy clashes in the region.

In a press statement the KTC reiterated its belief that the government, particularly Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is of Mamprusi descent, was complicit in the illegal actions associated with the Mamprusi people and their involvement in the Bawku chieftaincy dispute.

The KTC had called for all NPP political activities in Kusaug to be suspended, along with urging the community to distance itself from Dr. Bawumia’s political initiatives.

However, after considering the compliance of NPP members in Kusaug, their acknowledgment of the authority of the Zug-Raan and the Kusaug Traditional Council, as well as interventions from the Upper East Regional Minister and the President-elect of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs (Chiana Pio), the KTC has decided to lift the suspension.

The Council also recognized that the NPP parliamentary candidates are part of the community and share concerns over the handling of the Bawku chieftaincy conflict and the actions of the Mamprusi settlers.

Despite this development, the KTC has emphasized that no one should obstruct NPP members or their parliamentary candidates from carrying out political activities in Kusaug.

However, all other directives from the KTC’s previous press conference will remain in force until fugitive Seidu Abagre is arrested and removed from Bawku
