A resident of the Sunyani East Constituency shared their thoughts on voting and the country’s economic future during a recent appearance on Channel One TV’s #CommunityForum.
“I feel compelled to vote as it’s my civic duty, and my conscience won’t let me rest if I don’t contribute to electing the right candidate,” the resident explained.
Having been a media professional in the past, the resident emphasized the importance of voting as both a responsibility and a means of ensuring accountability from elected leaders.
“I believe in checks and balances, and I know that we must hold our leaders accountable for how they use power,” they added. “If I don’t contribute to the outcome, I would feel guilty if the wrong candidate takes power.”
While still undecided about which candidate to support, the resident voiced concerns about the future direction of Ghana’s economy.
“I’ve heard talk about a 24-hour economy, but I don’t sense the passion or a radical approach to its implementation,” they said. “When youth unemployment is high, it’s like a slow death for the nation.”
“By the time we reach the eighth year of governance under the current constitution, we begin to see inconsistencies in policies,” they observed, referencing President Akufo-Addo’s reduction of fuel prices during protests and frequent wage increases that came too late.
“There’s often a lack of consistency in policy, and that worries me.”
the resident expressed openness to hearing more about the plans for the economy in the coming weeks. “I’m still thinking of who to vote for,”
they admitted, adding that they would wait to hear more about the 24-hour economy proposal before making their decision.
The resident emphasized that for the 24-hour economy to succeed, the government must take a more radical approach.
“It’s not just about industrial parks,” they said.
“We need things like a dualized rail system that allows people to live in places like Kumasi and work in Koforidua or Cape Coast.
And we can’t ignore the safety of our roads, which are prone to accidents.”
“I feel compelled to vote as it’s my civic duty, and my conscience won’t let me rest if I don’t contribute to electing the right candidate,” said a resident of the Sunyani East Constituency on #CommunityForum.#ElectionBureau#CitiVerify#GhanaPolls2024
