Director of Communications for the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and member of the NPP’s communications team George Kwadwo Ayisi, has defended the introduction of the E-Levy and other taxes,by NPP government attributing them to the “exigencies of the moment” that the country faced in recent years.
Speaking on TV3’s NewDay program, Ayisi explained that the government had to take urgent fiscal measures to address the country’s economic challenges, including the introduction of the controversial E-Levy.
“The exigencies of the moment demanded that we introduce these taxes,” he said, stressing that the government acted in response to pressing financial needs and to stabilize the economy.
Ayisi highlighted that despite the fiscal challenges, Ghana had recorded a 5.9% growth in the first half of the year, which he described as “very positive.”
He suggested that the growth demonstrated the effectiveness of the government’s strategy in navigating the country’s economic difficulties.
“If we are able to achieve this, we can plug the gaps and the stream of revenues will increase, bringing hope for the future,” Ayisi said.
The E-Levy, which was implemented in 2022, has been a point of contention for many Ghanaians due to its impact on mobile money transactions.
Critics argue that it places a financial burden on citizens, particularly those with lower incomes. However, Ayisi defended the tax, emphasizing that it was a necessary response to the economic situation.
