’Dampare, Stop it’ – Kwaku Azar reacts to Ghc980 Police Recruitment medical fee

Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, commonly referred to as Kwaku Azar, has chastised the Ghana Police Service for charging recruits scheduled to undergo medical screening.

The Ghana Police Service in the release dated November 5, 2024 announced that its recruitment exercise had reached the medical screening stage, with text messages sent to candidates who passed the examination phase.

According to the release, successful candidates will have to pay for their medical screening which costs Ghc980.00 per individual.

Reacting to the release in a Facebook post, Kwaku Azar stated that recruits should not be made to bear the cost of the medical screening.

“The employer must cover costs required for employment. Dampare, stop it. Da Yie!” he stated.

He further went on to recommend some amendments for the Labour Act.

Below are his recommendations:

Employer Responsibility for Medical Examination Costs

  1. No employer shall require any prospective employee or job applicant to pay for any medical or physical examination required as a condition of employment.
  1. No employer shall withhold or deduct from an employee’s wages, or require an employee to pay, any fees or costs for medical or physical examinations that are mandated by law, regulation, or the employer’s policy.
  1. All costs associated with required pre-employment and employment medical or physical examinations shall be covered fully by the employer.
