Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Alexander Afenyo Markin and Ghanaian Journalist, and Lawyer, Richard Dela Sky have been fingered as being members of a President Akufo-Addo led cartel to prevent the passage of the anti-gay bill.
The Ghanaian anti-LGBT bill (formally the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill) is a proposed law in Ghana that would introduce wide-ranging restrictions on LGBT+ rights.
The bill was approved by the Parliament of Ghana on 28 February 2024 with bipartisan support and will only come into effect only if signed into law by President Nana Akufo-Addo.
However, they have been delays in President Akufo-Addo assenting to the bill as some private citizens have also filed suits against the bill, stating it is a violation of human rights.
Dr. Amanda Odoi and Richard Dela Sky challenging the passage of the LGBTQ+ Bill by Ghana’s Parliament, saying it is unconstitutional.
However, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo Prampram and one of the leading advocates for the passage of the anti-gay bill says Dr. Amanda Odoi and Richard Dela were asked to challenge the bill by President Akufo-Addo.
“Akufo-Addo is the one who sent Amanda Odoi and Richard Sky to court. Akufo-Addo wrote to parliament on the 4th of March that there was a court case on the matter. But the case only went to court on 5th of March. How did the President know that there was a court case going to court? We all know the relationship between Richard Sky and the current majority leader Afenyo-Markin,” Sam George said, indicating of a suspected conspiracy.
He also accused the Chief Justice of trying to delay hearings to the injunctions on the bill to prevent President Akufo-Addo from assenting it.
