Less than 24 hours after a massive fire destroyed over 50 wooden structures at the Agbogbloshie Old Fadama market in Accra, residents have started rebuilding their homes and businesses.
The blaze, which erupted around 9:38 pm on [date], spread rapidly through the densely packed market, leaving many without shelter and causing significant economic losses.
Despite the difficult terrain and limited access to the area, firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were able to contain the fire by 12:54 am and completely extinguish it by 1:38 am.
Assistant Division Officer Alex King Nartey described the challenges faced by fire crews, noting that reaching the scene was complicated due to the market’s layout.
The fire has left many residents of Agbogbloshie devastated, with some losing their homes and others losing their businesses.
The area, known for its high concentration of informal traders, has been severely impacted, with vendors now facing the loss of their livelihoods.
However, in the aftermath, residents have started to rebuild immediately. Many have gathered makeshift materials such as wood, tarpaulins, and other supplies to construct temporary shelters and stalls.
Despite the loss, the community is determined to get back to work as quickly as possible.
The Ghana National Fire Service has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, but the community is now focused on recovery.
