Zambian president fires 3 top judges who ruled against him in presidential petition

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema, has sacked three Constitutional Court judges who presided over a presidential petition in 2016.

The three Constitutional Court judges presided over a presidential petition in 2016 in which they dismissed Hichilema’s challenge against the election victory of former President Edgar Lungu.

President Hakainde Hichilema previously suspended the three judges over alleged judicial misconduct, drawing further accusations of political interference in the judiciary.

Their dismissal comes after they lost a court application for a review of a judicial panel’s decision recommending their suspension.
