Board Chair of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (Gmet), George Isaac Amoo, has warned staff of the agency against joining in the organized labour strike against illegal mining.

He described Gmet as part of the essential service providers in Ghana, making it critical for staff not to embark on the strike.

“Gmet is part of the essential services of this country so on behalf of the board and leadership of this agency, I want to announce to you that Gmet does not approve any of its workers to join the nationwide strike. Any worker who will flout the directive of not joining should consider himself or herself of having terminated his or her contract when they join the strike,” he stated.

According to him, any staff member who absents themselves from work should consider themselves as having terminated their contract.

Labor unions represented by the Organised Labour organization have called for a nationwide strike from Oct. 10.

The action is to denounce illegal mining, known as “Galamsey,” due to its impact on the environment. The work stoppage may last several days if the government does not answer their demands.

However, some state agencies have warned their staff against embarking on the strike with some threatening to fire their staff should they join the strike.
