Presidential candidate for National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has accused the Akufo-Addo administration of mismanaging the economy, particularly highlighting the dramatic increase in the cedi-dollar exchange rate from Ghc4 to Ghc17.

During his campaign tour, Mahama questioned, “How do you take the cedi-dollar rate from Ghc4 to Ghc17 and boast as ‘better managers of the economy’?” He criticized the NPP for continuing to claim effective economic management despite the severe challenges faced by Ghanaians.

“They don’t accept that they have created hardship. They still sit on radio and say, ‘We are the better managers of the economy,'” he remarked.

He pointed to the rising costs of essential goods as further evidence of mismanagement: “You took cement from Ghc24 per bag to Ghc210 per bag, and you say you are better managers of the economy. A gallon of petrol went from Ghc14 to Ghc72.”

Mahama referenced recent surveys indicating that over 80% of Ghanaians believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.

He urged voters to recognize the urgent need for change, stating, “If you are going in the wrong direction, what do you do? You have to change course.”

Reflecting on the current administration’s impact, he metaphorically described the NPP as an “elephant” that has caused significant destruction, declaring, “The time has come for the elephant to go back into the bush.”
