You deserve to be shot if you are caught mining on a water body – Joe Wise

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Joseph Osei-Owusu, has said illegal miners mining on water bodies deserve to be shot.

Joe Wise, as he is commonly known made this statement during a radio interview, he is proposing radical extreme measures to confront an extreme problem.

He recommended that security personnel should be authorized to shoot illegal miners on sight if they are caught engaging in mining activities, particularly on water bodies.

Joe Wise said, “You deserve to be shot if you are caught mining on a water body. There were about 15 changfans with individuals on it at Dunkwa”.

“Immediately the patrol team bus arrived to round them all up, they had dived into the water. It is difficult to get hold of them. The best thing to do is to shoot them. The others will be deterred.” He reiterated.

Meanwhile, in a press statement dated October 9, 2024, President Akufo-Addo directed the Minister for Defense to deploy additional military forces to intensify the ongoing “Operation Halt”, which aims to curb illegal mining activities.

President Akufo-Addo expressed his commitment to end illegal mining and called on all Ghanaians to unite in the fight.
