Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei-Owusu affectionately called Joe Wise has made a bold statement, advocating for the immediate shooting and killing of individuals found at illegal mining sites, also known as galamsey site.

This comes as galamsey activities continue to devastate Ghana’s water bodies and forests, sparking concerns that the country may soon have to import drinking water.

Organised Labour has taken a strong stance on the issue, proposing a nationwide indefinite strike starting October 11, until the government takes decisive action against galamsey.

In an interview on Asaasepa Atumpan show, Joe Wise discussed that, the government is doing its best to curb galamsey, but the people involved claiming to have prospecting licenses that allow them to operate do not allow this hence the only solution is to shoot and kill those involved.

However, these licenses only permit mining up to one square foot, whereas illegal miners often exceed this limit, mining up to 100 square meters.

The challenge lies in arresting these illegal miners, as they often evade capture by diving into rivers and swimming away. In light of this, Joe Wise suggests training snipers to shoot illegal miners on sight, believing this will deter others from engaging in such activities.

“I comprehend that a prospecting  license allows for digging a small area, approximately one square foot, but these individuals are excavating vast areas of up to 100 meters square without a valid mining license. What are the consequences of shooting someone engaging in such illegal mining activities?”, he questioned.

Joe Wise previously advocated the need for stronger mining regulations, pointing out that illegal miners don’t pay taxes and harm the environment.

He advised for responsible mining practices, ensuring that the government receives revenue from mining activities.
