A resident in Bawku has boldly stated that residents in Bawku are ready to die as they protest the newly imposed 12-hour curfew by the government.

According to the residents, a similar issue is happening in Walewale, and a curfew was placed in the area but the residents refused to obey the curfew so they will also not obey the curfew in Bawku today or tomorrow.

The escalation of violence follows the resurgence of a long-standing chieftaincy conflict, sparked by the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile.

The conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least eight individuals and numerous injuries.

The government has imposed a curfew in Bawku to address the unrest, effective October 28, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily.

Speaking to the media during the protest, one of the protesters said, “We don’t need a curfew in Bawku, what is happening in Bawku here is the same thing that is happening in Walewale they gave them a curfew and they say they will not obey the curfew so Bawku here too we will not obey the curfew here today or tomorrow till the truth comes out we are ready to die”.

“We will not respect any security man in Bawku here, as we are here, we are with them they should fire us”, he boldly added.

Meanwhile, in response to the security threats, the Ghana Police Service has assured the public of an increased security presence along the Bolga-Tamale highway following a recent shooting incident over the weekend.
