Leader of the New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, paid a visit to an illegal mining (galamsey) site in an undisclosed location, and what ensured after was heartbreaking.
In the cover of darkness, Cheddar and his team journeyed to the galamsey site and witnessed some young men mining illegally that late at night.
Aided with a flood light and excavators, the young men dug the ground in search of gold under the watch of a police man who threatened to arrest Cheddar for interrupting with the work of the galamseyers.
The sad and teary Cheddar was heartbroken at the eye sore and said, “We’re not giving our people jobs and they are being used by foreigners. We also don’t help our people get jobs. You don’t give them jobs and then the choose to engage in galamsey. Even in that, you refuse to resource them and teach them to mine to save the land and water bodies, and they’re now destroying them (land and water bodies).
The police is protecting them, the ministers have also bought excavators and the chiefs are also taking their share and we are destroying the country.”
Ghanaians in the capital are protesting and calling on the government to ban mining as galamsey activities have destroyed the nation’s water bodies and forests. Cheddar deems it a disrespect to Ghanaians fighting the ramifications of illegal mining on behalf of the citizenry, while some keep on destroying the environment by engaging in the illegality.
The politician admitted that the galamseyers were just the workforce, working for some of the nation’s leaders.
“I have come here because I want Ghanaians to know that even in the evenings galamsey happens. I am not here because I am coming to arrest or expose you. I am here because I want to save the situation of this country. I am a young leader who understand business, understand humanity and understand nature, and I have embarked on this journey to save my nation and my country and my people,” he added.
Nana Kwame Bediako believes the galamsey cannot be eradicated overnight, but needs industrialization and making it a real business if Ghana wants to rid itself of galamsey and its effects on the environment.
“Ghana Police is protecting them at site, Minister bought the excavator and they are busily spoiling our lands,
Go to Accra and see protest. I’m here to show Ghanaians that the Galamsey is going on at night” – Cheddar
