here’s a look at five likely candidates who may contend for the NDC flagbearer position once former President John Dramani Mahama exits the race:

1. Haruna Iddrisu

The former Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, remains a prominent figure within the NDC. Known for his influence in Parliament, he has developed relationships across party lines and has supported both NDC and NPP young MPs in their roles. With a reputation for securing resources, he’s believed to possess the financial capacity required to run a well-resourced campaign. His northern Ghana roots also bolster his appeal, given the NDC’s strength in the region.

2. Alex Segbefia

Alex Segbefia, former Minister of Health, has the backing of those in the party who believe it’s time for another flagbearer from the Volta Region, following the leadership of the late Jerry John Rawlings. Although Segbefia hasn’t yet openly declared his intentions, his efforts within the party hint at a potential campaign. Whether his Volta roots will be enough to carry him to victory remains uncertain, but he could play a strategic role in the upcoming NDC leadership selection.

3. Asiedu Nketiah

Popularly known as “General Mosquito,” Asiedu Nketiah is a powerful and seasoned politician who has served as NDC’s General Secretary for many years. His electoral savvy and party loyalty have earned him respect and influence within the NDC and beyond. While he hasn’t formally announced his candidacy, rumors circulate that he has aspirations for the Jubilee House, especially given his strong track record of winning difficult elections.

4. Alban Bagbin

As the current Speaker of Parliament and an experienced politician, Alban Bagbin is another potential candidate. He previously contested for the NDC flagbearership against Mahama in 2016, though he was unsuccessful. His ascent to Speaker of Parliament in 2020 has strengthened his profile and influence, and he could leverage this experience if he chooses to re-enter the flagbearership race.

5. Kwame Awuah-Darko

Though less visible in recent party affairs, Kwame Awuah-Darko, former Managing Director of BOST and TOR, has long been considered a viable candidate. He was reportedly considered multiple times as a potential running mate for Mahama due to his financial resources and quiet influence within the NDC. While he hasn’t confirmed his ambitions, Awuah-Darko’s substantial financial base and background could serve him well in a campaign.

These potential candidates each bring unique strengths to the table, from deep-rooted regional support to extensive political experience, setting up an intriguing race for the NDC’s future leadership.
