The Supreme Court has today, October 30, 2024, dismissed a motion filed by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, through his legal representative.

Speaker Bagbin filed a motion to have Justice Gaewu recuse himself from the panel to hear the case on whether the apex court could set aside his declaration of four seats vacant in parliament.

Legal representative Speaker Bagbin, Thaddeus Sory asserted that Justice Gaewu’s prior political ties with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presented a conflict of interest.

The Chief Justice in her ruling disclosed that once the person is vetted and approved by Parliament, it means they are competent to hear such cases.

She added that the Supreme Court currently has a former General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and a former NDC parliamentary candidate as Justices.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is currently hearing the case of Speaker Bagbin which seeks to overturn an earlier ruling that temporarily stayed his declarations of four parliamentary seats as vacant.
