Speaking on JOY FM Super Morning Show, Erastus Asare Donkor revealed that in 2018 members of Operation Vanguard were made to return seized galamsey machinery.

Erastus Asare Donkor said, “A whole operation Vanguard in 2018 had to go to Kobro that time the forest was standing, now it is 50% pits and gullies, and they seized equipment from somebody who was illegally pillaging the forest at the time”.

“On their way returning the equipment to the nearest Assembly, a call comes and says return the equipment and apologies to the illegal miner and they did”, he added.

Operation Vanguard was a military-police task force set up by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017 to combat the operations of galamseyers in Ghana.

The task force operations were often in the news for arrests and seizures of mining equipment from illegal miners but were tainted by controversy amid allegations of corruption and use of excessive force.

Their operations were suspended in 2021 by the government.
