Hubtel, a Ghanaian IT solutions provider, says the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) only paid them about $12 million (GHS171 million) to develop the PowerApp for ECG’s revenue collection efforts.

The statement issued by Hubtel is in response to claims made recently by African Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) that the ECG paid Hubtel $25 million (Gh¢315 million) to develop the PowerApp.

Hubtel explained that the amount ($25 million) was only a figure set as the cost limit by the ECG Board at the start of the project, and not an amount that was to be paid to them.

“Hubtel has NOT been paid $25 million. Hubtel has NOT quoted anywhere that we have received $25 million from ECG,” the statement said.

The service provider, further indicated that it does not receive a 3percent benefit from electricity purchased by Ghanaians.

Addressing claims of Hubtel being owned by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the company emphatically denied it, saying no government or politically affiliated person(s) owned any shares in the company.
