Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame has called on politicians to refrain from encouraging galamsey activities through their rhetoric and actions.

His comments follow a controversial vidoe made by a Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Parliamentary Health Committee, Dr. Ayew Afriyie, boldly stating during a campaign event on September 27 that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government would not impose a ban on small-scale mining.

The video sparked widespread attention and condemnation from various advocacy groups, who are calling for the government to take decisive action against illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”

Attorney-General during the Annual Conference of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana, stated the importance of responsible political discourse.

“Politicians must also desist from encouraging galamsey through their rhetoric and actions. Those who preach amnesty for galamsey offenders must be rejected.

There should be no place for the grant of amnesty for such crimes in our body politic, as the lives of citizens and the future of our nation are at risk.”
