President Akufo-Addo in 2022 declared it is illegal to manufacture, distribute or sell ‘chanfangs’ a machine used on river bodies for illegal mining.

Chanfang motors are used by galamsey operators to wash the ore during mining which has contributed to the high pollution of water bodies in Ghana.

The Ghana Water Company on numerous occasions have said they are unable to treat the water for its consumers due to the turbidity of the water from this galamsey affected rivers, forcing the company’s treatment plant in some regions to shut down on some occasions.

Meanwhile in Accra the Concerned Citizens Anti-Galamsey are protesting against galamsey and are demanding action against illegal mining.

The demonstration, which will run until October 5, aims to highlight the ongoing environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.

The protesters are also demanding the immediate release of 53 Democracy Hub protesters who were arrested and still in remand during an anti-galamsey demo some weeks ago.
