In the viral video, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in 2016 gave detailed reasons why the National Democratic Congress government by John Mahama ended up at the IMF.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the NDC government was spending and borrowing too much relative to the revenues that were coming into the government’s coffers.

Speaking in an interview Dr. Bawumia said, “This is why we got into the IMF, we were spending too much relative to revenues, which is true, we were borrowing too much, your external payment position has deteriorated which is true, and so you ended up your growth is reducing which is true so you ended up at the IMF and the IMF will impose certain conditions which is true, and if you don’t do certain things right the anchor will not hold which is true, so I am not quite sure what it is that is not true that I said”.

Dr. Bawumia asserted that “Unfortunately, the supporters of this government and the government itself are very reluctant to admit the truth even when it hits them in the face”.

Fast forward to 2024, Ghana is back on an IMF program this time with him being the vice president of the country.

Ghanaians are experiencing economic hardship after the NPP in opposition sweet-talked them with numerous promises.

The Akufo-Addo Bawumia government has constantly blamed external factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war for the severe hardship Ghanaians are facing.

Unfortunately, everything Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia said in the surfaced video in April 2016 is very true today as well, spending and borrowing too much relative to the revenues that are coming into the government’s coffers but Dr.  Mahamudu Bawumia and NPP supporters have been very reluctant to admit the truth even when it hits them in the face.

The Presidential candidate of the NPP Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia today has reduced his role in the Akufo-Addo administration as a mere driver’s mate.
