The Wa Central Constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended its Women’s Organizer, Takora Attawa, citing reasons of insubordination and conduct detrimental to the party’s unity. The suspension comes just two months before the 2024 general elections, adding tension to the political atmosphere in the constituency.

According to a statement issued on October 1, 2024, by the Constituency Secretary, Mumuni Abass Sidik, Attawa’s suspension was necessitated by her repeated failure to adhere to the party’s code of conduct. The NPP’s leadership stated that her “consistent gross disrespect and insubordination” were jeopardizing the progress of the party in Wa Central. Attawa has been asked to refrain from any official party activities while an investigation is conducted by the Disciplinary Committee.

The statement, addressed to relevant party officials, invoked Article 3 (7)(1) of the NPP Constitution, which grants the Constituency Executive Committee authority to suspend any officer accused of misconduct, pending a formal inquiry. The document emphasized that Attawa’s behavior had defied attempts to reconcile differences, and despite repeated warnings, her actions persisted in eroding the cohesion of the constituency leadership.

“By this suspension, you are hereby restrained from portraying yourself as the Constituency Women’s Organizer of the party. Furthermore, you are not allowed to attend any Constituency Executive Committee meetings or perform any duties related to your previous office,” the statement read.

The party further highlighted that her conduct specifically violated Article 3(5)A(2) of the NPP Constitution, which underscores the principles of loyalty, discipline, and unity among members. The restraining order may be reviewed by the Regional Executive Committee, but Attawa was warned that further disregard of party discipline could lead to harsher sanctions.

The decision has generated considerable debate among political observers, with many raising concerns about its timing so close to the December elections. Some fear that suspending a prominent party official at such a critical moment could weaken the NPP’s support base and have adverse effects on their electoral prospects in Wa Central.
